G.A Group at London Design Festival: Celebrating Craftsmanship and Emerging Trends
Last month, our team had the pleasure of attending the London Design Festival along with the dynamic Focus/24 event at Chelsea Harbour. Both occasions offered us the opportunity to connect with new collaborators and explore the latest trends in design.
Our London office’s studio librarian, Jen Barham, shared her thoughts on a few standout themes that left a lasting impression:
The Revival of Craftsmanship:
A significant theme this year was the resurgence of traditional craftsmanship, with a modern twist. Exhibitors emphasised the use of age-old techniques in surface design and furniture creation, while celebrating the raw beauty of materials, reminiscent of Brutalist design.
Much like Brutalism’s focus on exposed materials and honest, unrefined surfaces, this trend showcased a commitment to authenticity in design, with workshops and talks highlighting the value of sharing artisanal expertise and preserving timeless skills.
Maximalism is Back:
Maximalist designs, with bold pattern-on-pattern combinations and richly textured fabrics, took center stage. This playful approach embraced vibrant colour palettes and layered textures, presenting a feast for the senses that truly stood out in the exhibitions.
Design with a Story:
Narrative-driven design emerged as a powerful trend. Many showcased pieces, whether fabric, furniture, or large-scale installations, told compelling stories, intertwining artistry with meaning. Each piece invited viewers to engage with the deeper narrative, creating an immersive experience throughout the Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour.
