The river runs through the city, as it does the design; ebbing and flowing across surfaces and into fabrics.
Occupying a historical building dating back to 1918, the design of this grand hotel creates a feeling of contemporary luxury in a classic interior. In keeping with the Ritz-Carlton genre of ‘the cosmopolitan house’, the traditional details and contemporary elements are brought together in a manner that respects the existing building and defines an elegant residential feel. The story thread of ‘the blue Danube’ brings together both sides of the city, providing a strong reference for the interior scheme.
The central narrative is reflected in the carpet designs, particularly in the guestrooms, corridors and lobby, where a subtle tone-on-tone use of shades of blues and greys tells the story of the river. The swirling carpet designs mimic the ebb and flow of the river. The carpet in the lobby expresses the energy and movement of the Danube, drawing the guests from the entrance towards the reception desk. In the guestrooms we imagine the river has frozen, creating overlapping shards of blue in a contemporary carpet design that offers a striking contrast to the more traditional elements existing in the room.

The ripple design of the carpet appears to continue as it reflects across the surface of the high gloss finish to the wooden room dividers.
The Executive Lounge was a totally new area, formed from three former bedrooms and two meeting rooms. The objective was to create an environment in which guests felt comfortable serving themselves, but with option to be served too. See-through shelf divisions make the space appear bigger whilst light upholstery and marble along with reflective surfaces and mirrors provider a solution to the lack of natural light. These lighter and contemporary elements have been balanced with the use of rich Macassar ebony paneling to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
